Updates on Personal Projects: February 2018

At the time of writing this post, I have been blogging about my software development career for over a month. Without a doubt, this has been an awesome career move for me. Ever since I posted my very first post I’ve gotten multiple compliments on the design of this website. These comments specifically surprised me the most, since I’m not a designer at all. However, I’m willing to work on the design of my apps until it looks good. I realize that I have not talked about iOS development lately. Don’t worry, I just finished the iOS app for Park-Lane Tobacconist. I think the app turned out quite well, and I definitely have plans to write about some new topics I learned during the process of making that app. I also plan to expand my writing in the area of mobile development to include Xamarin. I recently took on a cross-platform mobile application project, as a reason to check out the latest versions of the technology. I’m still in the early stages of this new project but my early thoughts on using cross-platform tools will be coming out in the next couple of weeks.

I also have a steady stream of web projects going on. The Slack to Teams application is right on schedule. This project has really allowed me to learn more about REST API’s and using OAuth2 in my applications. This knowledge will definitely be useful in the future when trying to connect third-party data sources into my apps. I plan to make a post about this sometime in the future. In addition, this app has also taught me some practical examples of data migration. I have never done a data migration project before, so this gives me a perfect opportunity to learn something new. In fact, I’m in the process of reading this book In order to learn the processes and methodologies of data migration in order to be successful. I’m also in the process of starting a new web application project. However, I was not hired to make this app. But its something I wanted to create for a while. I’m not ready to discuss this one yet. But I’m very early in the requirements gathering phase.

I also consider this blog a project of mine. I have a number of ideas I would like to implement. For example, I would like to expand into doing video content. This doesn’t mean that the written posts are going away. However, expanding into video content would allow me to have more than one post on this site a week. So far, the video ideas I have so far are:

  • Question and Answer Videos
  • Vlogs around working on my personal projects.

I’m sure, I’ll have more ideas over time, but that’s all the video ideas I have for now. However, I’m always looking for feedback on these ideas so be sure to let me know on Twitter.
